Bounce Collab 2022

I was lucky enough to be 1 of 22 talented motion graphics and 3D artists from across the globe (every continent except Antarctica!) to be invited to collaborate on a video. The task was simple; take a basic ball bounce animation, make it fun, and we’ll make something together.

Without further ado, allow me to introduce Peanut Butter

Behind the scenes - This video takes you through various stages of development, from basic sketches, lighting and texture renders, through to the final product - see Peanut Butter come to life!

My final submission. Peanut Butter bouncing on repeat.

The final video with all collaborators. #BounceCollab2022 will show you everyone else’s behind the scenes work, too.

I was first inspired by the colour palette provided to us by the collab organizers, it reminded me of a coral reef.

Fun fact, I’m originally from Australia, and my grandparents lived on an island at the tip of the Great Barrier Reef - I have fond memories of snorkelling the reef as a child, so I knew this could be a fun project.

I thought I’d animate a baby jellyfish, and my wife came up with the idea to call him Peanut Butter (get it? Peanut Butter the Jelly), which is obviously the best idea ever.

The next jolt of inspiration came from my oldest son’s Squishmallow named Daddy Octopus. He was throwing the stuffed toy down the stairs, and the way it moved caught my eye. It was at this stage that Peanut Butter the Jelly morphed into an octopus.

This inspiration for this project was truly a family effort, though, because I wanted to have the baby octopus jumping on something. As a father to two young boys, I’m very used to being a jungle gym for them. So below PB you’ll see a very patient, but probably extremely tired, parent octopus playing the role of trampoline.

This was such a fun project to work on, and so cool to see everyone else’s take on it. With a bit of luck I’ll be invited back to similar collabs in the future.
